How to check HRV on your Apple Watch

Where HRV hides in the Health app, why Apple's number (SDNN) differs from Whoop's (RMSSD), what counts as good for your age, and why your own baseline beats every chart.

Your Apple Watch has been measuring your heart rate variability for as long as you have owned it, and Apple buried the result four taps deep in the Health app. HRV is the variation in time between individual heartbeats, and it is worth digging out: it is one of the few numbers on your wrist that reflects the state of your autonomic nervous system, the balance between fight-or-flight and rest-and-digest. Higher generally means recovered and adaptable; suppressed generally means stressed, fatigued, or fighting something. The catch is that reading it correctly requires knowing two things most people never learn: where the readings come from, and why the number is not comparable to anyone else’s.

Where the number lives

The watch takes HRV readings during Breathe and Mindfulness sessions and periodically in the background throughout the day, with the most consistent samples coming overnight while you sleep. Everything lands in the Health app on your iPhone:

    The bottom-right tab on iPhone. HRV never appears in your default Summary unless you put it there, which is why most people have never seen it.

    You will see your latest reading in milliseconds and a chart of history going back years. Switch to the 6-month view once; seeing your own long-term range is the fastest cure for panicking about any single day.

    Tap the star. From now on HRV sits on your Summary screen, and the daily check becomes a five-second glance instead of an archaeology dig.

    Open the Mindfulness app on the watch and run a 1-minute Breathe session. The watch records an HRV sample during it. Sitting still, breathing slowly, this is the closest the watch gets to a controlled spot reading, useful if you want a morning value on days you did not wear it overnight.

Apple’s number is not Whoop’s number

Apple reports HRV as SDNN, the standard deviation of the intervals between normal heartbeats, in milliseconds. Whoop and Oura report RMSSD, the root mean square of successive differences between those intervals. Both are legitimate HRV metrics, but they weight the physiology differently: RMSSD isolates the fast, breath-to-breath changes driven by the parasympathetic nervous system, while SDNN captures overall variability including slower rhythms. On the same heart at the same moment they produce different numbers, frequently 20 ms or more apart, and there is no clean conversion between them. So when a friend’s Whoop says 95 and your watch says 55, you have learned nothing about either of you. Compare Apple to Apple, and only across time.

What counts as good

Population ranges exist and they are broad. SDNN in healthy adults commonly spans roughly 40 to 90 ms in your 20s and 30s, drifting down toward 25 to 60 ms past 50, with fit endurance athletes often above those bands. If you want to see where you sit, the HRV calculator places your reading against age ranges properly. But hold the tables loosely, because genetics set your baseline more than fitness does: two equally healthy 30-year-olds can live at 35 ms and 105 ms and both be fine. The real point of checking HRV is never your placement in a population. It is your deviation from your own normal, which is why the first month of readings matters most: it establishes the baseline every future reading gets judged against.

Getting readings you can trust

Three habits separate usable HRV data from noise. Wear the watch to sleep, because overnight readings are taken under the most repeatable conditions you have: same posture, no coffee, no meetings. Keep the band snug, one finger-width above the wrist bone; a loose optical sensor produces garbage quietly. And check the number in the morning, reading last night’s values, rather than reacting to a random afternoon sample that mostly reflects the meeting you just left.

Reading it without fooling yourself

Single readings are noise. Day-to-day swings of 15 to 20 percent are ordinary physiology, so the unit worth reading is the 7-day average, and the signal worth acting on is that average moving against your baseline. A falling weekly trend usually has a boring explanation: accumulating training fatigue, alcohol (one heavy evening visibly dents the next night’s reading), short sleep, or sometimes an illness announcing itself a day or two early. When the trend is down, the reasonable response is unglamorous: easier training, earlier nights, and patience. A rising trend across weeks of consistent training is the quiet confirmation that the load is being absorbed. What HRV is not is a daily verdict to obey slavishly; if the trend says tired but you feel excellent, you are allowed to believe your legs.

When the number deserves skepticism

A few readings deserve the bin. Values taken right after exercise or during stress run artificially low; one-off spikes after a loose band or a night of odd sleep positions run high. Illness with fever scrambles everything for days. And if you have an arrhythmia such as atrial fibrillation, beat-to-beat variability stops meaning what these metrics assume it means, so the whole framework applies poorly; that is a conversation for a cardiologist, not a wearable. For everyone else the rule stays simple: trust the week, not the day, and trust your own baseline over every chart on the internet, including ours.

This is why 7-day averages are the unit worth reading; a single low morning means almost nothing, a falling weekly average means something.

Does low HRV mean I am sick or overtrained?

Not by itself. A multi-day falling trend against your baseline is associated with accumulating fatigue, alcohol, poor sleep and sometimes oncoming illness, so it is a reasonable prompt to ease off and pay attention. But HRV is one input, not a diagnosis. If you feel unwell, how you feel outranks the number, and a doctor outranks both.
