The actual choice you are making
This is not really a comparison of two recovery scores. Both products read overnight heart rate variability, resting heart rate, respiratory rate and sleep, compare them to your own baseline, and print a number between 0 and 100 in the morning. They agree far more often than the marketing on either side would suggest.
The choice is about hardware and about billing. WHOOP is a screenless band that you rent for as long as you want the data, and it is very good at the one job it does. Helix is software that reads a watch you have probably already bought, and it keeps the daily loop free because the sensor was never ours to sell you.

Cost, done out loud
WHOOP’s pricing changed in May 2025 when the 5.0 and MG hardware launched: One at $199 a year, Peak at $239, Life at $359. The band comes with the membership rather than being sold to you, which sounds generous until you notice that it means the hardware never becomes yours in any useful sense. Stop paying and it stops uploading.

The honest asterisk on that chart is the Apple Watch. If you do not own one, Helix costs you a watch, and the cheapest current SE is around $249. What makes that different from the WHOOP band is that the watch is a watch: it tells the time, takes calls, runs Apple’s own workout tracking, and keeps working if Helix disappears tomorrow. A WHOOP band with a cancelled membership is a bracelet.
Where WHOOP is genuinely better
Four things, and none of them are small if they apply to you.
Continuous HRV sampling. WHOOP measures through the night at a density Apple does not attempt. Apple Watch records SDNN samples irregularly, mostly during sleep and during Breathe sessions, and the overnight median Helix uses is built from a handful of readings rather than a continuous trace. Both approaches produce a usable baseline. WHOOP’s is less jumpy night to night.
Battery, and therefore actually wearing it. A recovery score needs you to sleep in the device. WHOOP’s battery pack charges the band while it is on your wrist, so there is no decision to make. Apple Watch needs a charging window, and the honest failure mode of every Apple Watch recovery app is the night you forgot. Charge in the evening while you cook, not overnight, and the problem mostly goes away, but it is a habit you have to build.
Android. Helix does not exist there. WHOOP does.
Wearing it where a watch does not go. WHOOP sells bicep bands and clothing with pockets for the sensor, which is a real advantage if you lift with a barbell in your hands or play a sport that bans wrist hardware.
WHOOP does well

Where Helix is genuinely better
Past the morning score, the two products stop overlapping almost entirely.
Per-muscle recovery. WHOOP gives you one number for an entire body, which means it cannot distinguish a leg day from a back day. Helix deposits fatigue on the specific muscles each logged set targets, using a catalog of 173 exercises with muscle-involvement weights, then decays it over muscle-specific windows of roughly 40 to 72 hours. The result is a map rather than a verdict: your quads can be red while your chest is green, which is what is actually true the day after squats.
A VO₂max lab, not a VO₂max estimate. Helix runs a GPS-measured Cooper test, guided 4x4 intervals, and lactate-threshold detection from the deflection in your heart-rate-versus-pace curve, then projects a trajectory with a forecast cone and a goal ETA. WHOOP reports neither a tested VO₂max protocol nor race predictions.
Bloodwork in the same model. Upload a panel as a PDF, photo or CSV and every marker is scored against age and sex specific ranges, with an athletic recovery lens over the markers that shape training. Then Experiments lets you pick a marker, get a protocol, and watch whether your body follows the predicted response curve.
The score explains itself. WHOOP does not publish its recovery formula. Helix shows the drivers behind the number, surfaces a confidence level while your baseline is still building, and freezes the morning verdict once the night is complete so it does not quietly drift while you look at it during the day.

Privacy, which is a real difference and not a slogan
WHOOP is a cloud product. Your biometric data goes to their servers, which is what makes the analytics work and what makes the membership model coherent. Helix has no backend and no account: scores are computed and stored on the iPhone, and the only thing that ever leaves is a set of anonymised numbers sent to OpenAI or Claude when you use the AI coach. There is no user table anywhere with your name in it, because there is no user table.
That is a design constraint as much as a feature. It is also why Helix cannot offer a web dashboard or sync between two phones, which WHOOP can.
The verdict
Choose WHOOP
You are on Android, or you will not wear a watch to bed
Those two constraints end the argument. Add to them anyone who needs a bicep band for contact sport or barbell work, and anyone who specifically wants the densest possible overnight HRV trace and is happy to rent it. WHOOP does its job well and the Peak tier is a genuinely good product for $239 a year.

The daily loop is free, the score shows its work, and the paid tier buys depth WHOOP does not sell at any price: per-muscle recovery, a real VO₂max testing protocol, and bloodwork in the same model. Three years costs $180 instead of $717, and nothing goes dark if you stop paying.
