The short answer
Go to app.whoop.com, sign in, open Membership, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click Cancel Your Membership. That is the whole mechanism.
The rest of this page is the part that actually catches people out: when the payments stop, whether you get anything back, and what happens to several years of your own physiological data.
Before you cancel: export your history
This is the step people skip and regret. Once the membership ends, WHOOP stops collecting, uploading and analysing your biometric data, and the analytics you have been building for a year or three stop being available to you. The band becomes a bracelet.
Request your data export from your account settings while the membership is still active, and wait for the file to arrive before you cancel anything. WHOOP allows one export request every 24 hours, so leaving it until the final afternoon of your term gives you no room to retry. The full walkthrough is in how to export your WHOOP data.
How to cancel, step by step
- 1
Open the web app, not the phone app
Go to app.whoop.com and sign in with the account that holds the membership. The cancellation control is reliably present on the web and is not always where you expect it in the mobile app, which is why most people end up here in the first place.
- 2
Open Membership from the menu
Select Membership. This page also shows your current tier, your renewal date and your term end date, all of which are worth reading before you go further.
- 3
Scroll to the very bottom
The link is at the foot of the page, below everything else. It is not hidden exactly, but it is as far from the top as it can be.
- 4
Select Cancel Your Membership and follow the prompts
You will be offered alternatives, including pausing, before it lets you finish. Keep going until you see a confirmation. You do not need to contact support at any point, and anyone telling you to call a number is not WHOOP.
- 5
Confirm in writing
Check for the confirmation email and keep it. Then look at your Membership page again and verify the status and the end date have changed. A cancellation you cannot evidence is a cancellation you may have to argue about.
Cancelling from the phone app
Short version: do not try. The cancellation control is not consistently exposed in the mobile app, and hunting for it through Settings is how most people end up convinced WHOOP has hidden it entirely.
If you only have your phone, open app.whoop.com in a mobile browser rather than the WHOOP app itself. Sign in, and the Membership page behaves exactly as it does on a laptop, with the same link at the bottom. It is a slightly awkward page on a small screen and it works.
When your billing actually stops
This is the part that generates the complaints, and it is worth being precise about because “cancelled” and “stopped paying” are not the same event.
WHOOP memberships carry a 12-month minimum commitment, including when you pay monthly. Paying every month does not mean you have a rolling monthly contract, which is the assumption underneath most of the surprise.
If you are inside your commitment period: cancelling generally stops the membership from renewing at the end of that period. The payments you have already committed to continue until the term end date shown on your Membership page.
If you are past your commitment period: cancelling stops the next renewal, and you keep access to the end of the period you have already paid for.
If you are inside 30 days of receiving the device: neither of the above applies to you and you should be using the returns process instead, which is the only route to money back.
In every case the number that matters is the term end date on your Membership page. Read it before you cancel, not after.
If you are inside 30 days, do this instead
The return process is separate from the cancellation flow and it is the only route to money back. Start at app.whoop.com/membership/returns within 30 days of receiving the device. WHOOP will tell you whether you need to ship the band back before the refund is processed.
Outside that window there is no refund, partial or otherwise, and cancelling only stops future charges. There is no pro-rata refund for the unused part of a term.
Cancel, pause, or return: which one you want
Three different mechanisms that people use interchangeably and should not.
Return gets your money back and only exists inside 30 days of receiving the device. If you are in that window and you are unsure, start here, because the option disappears and the others do not.
Pause stops billing for up to three months and keeps your data and your account. Nothing is uploaded while it is paused, which is the entire point. This is the right answer for an injury, a long trip, or a stretch where you know the band will sit in a drawer.
Cancel ends the relationship at the end of your term. Choose it when you are actually leaving, not when you are taking a break, because restarting later means starting a new commitment.
If the cancel link is not there
Three explanations cover almost every case, in order of likelihood.
You are in the phone app. The most common one. Open app.whoop.com in a browser instead, as above.
You are signed into the wrong account. If you have ever had two email addresses on WHOOP, or the membership was set up by someone else, the account you are looking at may simply not hold it. Check the email address on the profile.
It is already cancelled. A membership that has been cancelled and is running out its term will not offer the option again. The status on the Membership page tells you which state you are in.
If none of those apply, contact WHOOP support through the app or their site. Do not call a phone number you found in a search result, because WHOOP does not run a cancellation hotline and the numbers that rank for this are not theirs.
What happens afterwards
- Until the period ends, nothing changes. You keep full access through the billing period you have already paid for.
- After that, WHOOP stops collecting, uploading and analysing your biometric data, and the analytics in the app are no longer available to you.
- The band is yours to keep, but cancelling disables uploading, so it cannot sync new data. It is not repurposable as a generic tracker in any useful way.
- Your export still works, if you requested it while the membership was live. If you did not, do it now, before the period ends.
Cancelling from outside the US
The mechanism is identical wherever you are. app.whoop.com, Membership, bottom of the page, and the same 30-day return window from receipt of the device.
One thing worth knowing if you are in the EU, the UK or another market with strong consumer protection: your local law may give you cancellation or withdrawal rights beyond WHOOP’s own published policy, particularly on distance sales. That is a question for your national consumer authority rather than for this page, and it is worth asking before you accept that a term is unbreakable.
Where people go next
Most people cancelling WHOOP are not giving up on the idea of tracking recovery, they are giving up on renting it. The three common landing spots:
An app on a watch you already own. If you have an Apple Watch, the overnight HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature and sleep stages that WHOOP was charging you for are already being recorded and are sitting in Apple Health right now.
A ring with no subscription. The Ultrahuman Ring AIR is $349 once with no ongoing fee, and on Android the Galaxy Ring is the same idea from Samsung.
Oura, if it was really sleep you cared about. $349 plus $69.99 a year, which is roughly a third of WHOOP’s subscription, for the best sleep staging in the consumer category.
The full field, with three-year costs, is in the best WHOOP alternatives.
Weighing it up rather than committed? The head-to-head is at WHOOP vs Helix, and if you are considering a ring instead, start with WHOOP vs Oura Ring. Comparing against the watch you already own is WHOOP vs Apple Watch.
