What the fee is actually buying
You keep without paying: the three daily scores, Sleep, Readiness and Activity, plus ring battery, basic profile, settings and the Explore content. The ring keeps recording on your finger.
You lose without paying: detailed sleep analysis, heart rate data, the stress features and API access.
Read those two lists together and the shape becomes clear. The free tier gives you a number. The membership gives you the reason for the number. For a product whose entire value proposition is understanding your sleep, that is most of the thing.

How it compares over three years
The membership is the cheapest recurring fee among the subscription products here: about a third of WHOOP’s. That is a genuine point in its favour and it gets lost in complaints about paying at all.
The comparison that hurts is against the rings that do not charge. Ultrahuman is the same $349 up front and nothing after, which is roughly $210 less over three years. Oura’s answer is that its sleep model is better, and independent comparisons broadly agree, by a margin most people would call modest. Ways the cost is lower than it looks
The complimentary first month. Comes with a new ring. Set a reminder before it ends rather than after.
Annual over monthly. $69.99 against $71.88, so the saving is small but the annual plan is the default for a reason.
