Garmin ships Body Battery, Sleep Score, HRV Status and Training Readiness with the watch and charges nothing for them. Apple ships sensors and no recovery score. An honest look at what that difference is actually worth.

This is the comparison where Apple loses on the merits, and it is worth being straightforward about that. Garmin has been building recovery metrics for years and gives them away with the hardware. Apple records the same physiology and declines to interpret it.

What Garmin ships that Apple does not

Body Battery. An energy metaphor: a 0 to 100 reserve that drains with stress and activity and refills with rest and sleep. Intuitive in a way a raw HRV chart is not, which is most of why people like it.

HRV Status. A rolling classification of your overnight HRV against your own established range. Conceptually close to Apple’s Vitals, except Garmin does tell you what it means.

Training Readiness. The composite score, combining sleep, recovery time, HRV status, acute load and stress into one number. This is the direct WHOOP competitor and Apple has no equivalent.

Recovery time. An hours-until-ready estimate after each session. Crude, and useful as a sanity check.

Every one of those is included with the watch. Connect+ at $6.99 a month exists, and it is not what gates these.

What the Apple Watch has instead

Vitals. Five overnight metrics against your personal typical range, flagged Typical or Outlier, with no interpretation offered. Covered in the Vitals app explained.

Sleep Score. Duration, bedtime consistency and interruptions out of 100, with no physiology in it at all. See the Sleep Score explained.

Training Load. Last 7 days of workout effort against the last 28. The load side only, with nothing about capacity.

Garmin priced on the Forerunner 165 as a representative mid-range model; the range runs from about $199 to well over $1,000. Connect+ is excluded because it does not gate the recovery metrics compared here. The app-only products assume you already own an Apple Watch. If you do not, add roughly $249 for an Apple Watch SE, once, and note that it is a watch as well as a sensor.

Garmin does well

  • Continuous overnight HRV sampling, less noisy than opportunistic
  • Battery measured in days rather than hours
  • Deep sport-specific features, particularly for running and cycling

Where it falls short

  • Smartwatch features are noticeably weaker with an iPhone
  • Requires buying new hardware if you already own an Apple Watch
  • Connect+ has started paywalling presentation features that used to be free
  • Interface and app are functional rather than pleasant

Choose Garmin

You want the recovery metrics built in, and you are willing to change ecosystems

Genuinely the best native recovery package at this price, free with the watch, with battery life the Apple Watch cannot approach. If training is the main thing your wrist is for, this is a defensible switch.

Choose Apple Watch on its own

You want the smartwatch and are content reading dashboards yourself

Vitals, Sleep Score and Training Load cover a lot of ground for nothing. You are doing the synthesis that Garmin would do for you, on a device that is much better at everything that is not training.

Is Body Battery free on Garmin?

Can I get Body Battery on an Apple Watch?

Not the Garmin feature itself, which is proprietary. Third-party apps compute similar energy or recovery metrics from the HRV, resting heart rate, sleep and activity your Apple Watch already records. The numbers will differ because the model differs.

Which is more accurate for sleep and HRV?

Garmin samples HRV continuously overnight where the Apple Watch samples opportunistically, which gives Garmin a less noisy HRV picture. For sleep staging both are inferring from movement and heart rate and both carry the substantial uncertainty that implies.

Should I switch from Apple Watch to Garmin for recovery?

Only if the native recovery metrics matter more to you than the smartwatch features you would lose. If you mainly want a readiness number on the wrist you already have, an app on the Apple Watch gets you there without changing ecosystems or buying hardware.
