This question gets asked constantly and the answer has not changed through several watchOS releases. Apple has built almost everything a readiness score needs and has declined, so far, to take the last step.
What Apple actually gives you
Three features sit in the neighbourhood, and it is worth being precise about what each does.
Vitals takes five overnight metrics, learns your personal typical range, and marks each night Typical or Outlier. It never says what an outlier means. Detail in the Vitals app explained.
Sleep Score rates the night out of 100 on duration, bedtime consistency and interruptions. It uses no physiology at all, so it cannot tell you about recovery even in principle. Detail in the Sleep Score explained.
Training Load compares the effort of your last seven days against your last 28. That is the demand side of the equation and says nothing about your capacity to meet it today.
Put those together and you have three separate dashboards, each answering part of the question, and no single answer.

Why the omission is more defensible than it looks
The obvious reading is that Apple is slow. A more interesting reading is that Apple has decided a readiness score is an opinion, and it does not want to be in the business of publishing opinions about your body.
There is something to that. A readiness score compresses five noisy signals into one number and implies a course of action. It will be confidently wrong on the morning after a hard session that you actually absorbed well, and confidently green on the morning you are coming down with something. Every vendor that ships one accepts that error rate. Apple, which is regulated as a medical device manufacturer in several of its features, has been unwilling to.
What a readiness score is actually made of
Every implementation, whoever builds it, is doing roughly the same four things:
Baselining. Your HRV of 42 means nothing. Your HRV of 42 against your own 30-day average of 58 means a great deal. Everything starts here.
Normalising. Converting each signal into how unusual it is for you, so a heart rate deviation and an HRV deviation can be compared on the same scale.
Weighting. Deciding that HRV matters more than respiratory rate, or that temperature only matters past a threshold. This is where implementations genuinely differ and where the vendor is making a claim.
Confidence. The step most apps skip. With four nights of history the baseline is not trustworthy and an honest score says so rather than printing a decisive number.
