What the watch already knows
Open Apple Health and look under Heart and Sleep. Assuming you have worn the watch overnight, there is heart rate variability in there measured as SDNN, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, sleep stages, and on a Series 8 or later a wrist temperature deviation. Those five signals are the raw material of every recovery score sold, including the ones that come with a $349 ring.
What Apple does not do is combine them into a verdict. watchOS gives you Vitals, which tells you when tonight sits outside your typical range, and Training Load, which rates recent effort. Both are useful and neither says “go hard today”. Apple has been carefully conservative about that, and the gap it leaves is where this whole category lives.
What separates a good app from a bad one
Everything here reads the same data from the same watch, so nothing on this page has a sensor advantage over anything else. The differences are entirely in the modelling, and four things distinguish the serious implementations.
Baselining against you, not a chart. Population HRV ranges are so wide as to be nearly meaningless for an individual. A good app z-scores each signal against your own rolling history, usually around 60 days, and reports where today sits in your distribution.
Honest confidence. On day three, an app does not know your baseline. Saying so is better than printing a confident 68.
Not fabricating data. If you did not wear the watch, there is no HRV. An app that quietly shows zero strain, or fills a missing night with an estimate it does not label, is teaching you to trust something that is not there.
Doing something with the score. A number on its own changes no behaviour. The useful products connect it to today: a strain ceiling, a session recommendation, a muscle that is not ready yet.

The recovery score is built from overnight HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, SpO₂ and last night’s sleep, each z-scored against your own rolling baseline, and it shows which of those drove the verdict rather than presenting one opaque number. The weights are personalised over time: rate how your days actually felt and the model re-learns what matters for you specifically.
Two structural decisions worth knowing. The day rolls at wake from your main sleep rather than at midnight, so a session that ends at 11pm counts against the day it belonged to. And the morning verdict is frozen once the night completes, so it does not drift while you look at it.
Pro at $59.99 a year adds a per-muscle recovery map fed by your logged sets across a 173-exercise catalog, a VO₂max lab with a GPS-measured Cooper test, guided 4x4 intervals and lactate threshold detection, blood panel scoring, self-experiments and a circadian energy schedule.
Trade-offs: newer than most of this list, iPhone only, and there is no web dashboard or multi-device sync because there is no backend at all.
Bevel
Best for health breadth and a calm interface- Hardware

Bevel made its core free in December 2025, so recovery, sleep, strain and stress scores, nutrition logging and Strength Builder all cost nothing. It is the most polished product in this category and the design does a lot of work in making the numbers feel legible.
Pro at $99.99 a year adds AI coaching, Apple Health Records integration so clinical documents sit next to wearable data, and a Biological Age estimate.
Trade-offs: the most expensive paid tier here, and the depth is in health breadth rather than training. No VO₂max protocol, no per-muscle model, no lab panel scoring.
Athlytic
Best for one clean number, cheaply- Hardware

The category original, and still excellent at exactly what it set out to do. A clear recovery score, readable trends, mature watch complications, and Pro at around $24.99 a year with a usable free tier under it.
Trade-offs: narrow by design. If your ambitions grow past a single morning number you will run out of app.

Best for HRV obsessives and Android users- Hardware

Welltory approaches this from the HRV side rather than the training side, with detailed nervous-system framing and the ability to take spot measurements with a phone camera as well as reading a watch. It also runs on Android, which nothing else in this section does.
Trade-offs: $99 a year is steep for what is largely an interpretation layer, and the stress and energy framing is more consumer-wellness than athletic.

The one setup change that makes all of this work
Charge the watch in the evening, not overnight. Forty-five minutes while you cook or watch something is enough for most models to get through the night and the following day. Every Apple Watch recovery app lives or dies on this habit, because a missing night is not a low score, it is no score, and three of those a week makes any baseline meaningless.
Then give it time. A baseline built on 60 days of your own data is the thing that makes today’s number mean anything, and any app that looks confident on day two is telling you a story rather than a measurement.
