Run clubs in Kolkata

Calcutta22.57° N · 88.36° E9 m5 clubs listed

Kolkata has the best single piece of running ground in India and does not make a fuss about it. The Maidan is a thousand acres of open grass and tree-lined avenues in the middle of the city, a colonial-era parade ground that never got built on, and at 5:30am on a January morning it is full of runners, footballers, wrestlers and horses. The city also has the sharpest seasonal contrast of any Indian metro on this list: a genuine cool winter where dawn drops to 13°C, and a monsoon that brings thirty rain days in July.

The clubs

Listed alphabetically by nothing in particular, because the right club is the one you can reach. Every link below was opened and confirmed working on 2 August 2026. We do not list meeting times, since those change and stale times are worse than none: check the club’s own page before you turn up.

  1. Calcutta Run Club

    Kolkata

Started in November 2024 and grew faster than anything else in the city, running dozens of sessions in its first year. Weekly runs are free with no registration, which is exactly the low-friction model that has pulled a young crowd into running here.

  2. Salt Lake Runners

    Salt Lake and Central Park

Founded in 2012 and grown to a couple of hundred members, training around Central Park with a proper structure of core work, dynamic stretching and running rather than just a group jog. The established club of the eastern suburbs.

  3. Kolkata Running Squad

    Victoria Memorial and Red Road

Founded in 2015 and training five or six days a week around the Maidan, with a genuine programme of long runs and tempo sessions. The most serious training group in central Kolkata.

  4. Kolkata Runners

    City-wide

A city-wide running community rather than a single-location club, connecting runners across Kolkata and pointing people towards local groups and races.

  5. Kolkata Ultra

    Kolkata

The long-distance end of the city's scene, organised around ultra events and the runner groups that train for them. A different proposition from the social crews, and the place to look if road 10Ks have stopped being interesting.

How running works in Kolkata

Kolkata's running scene rebuilt itself recently and fast. The city has a deep athletic history, but the current club culture is strikingly new: Calcutta Run Club only started in November 2024 and had run more than sixty group runs and built a five-figure following within its first year. That is a different trajectory from Chennai or Hyderabad, where the dominant organisations date from 2006 and 2007, and it means the Kolkata scene skews younger, more social and more Instagram-shaped than the other Indian cities here.

Underneath the new arrivals sit longer-standing groups organised around neighbourhoods. Salt Lake Runners has been going since 2012 and grew to a couple of hundred members training around Central Park in the planned eastern suburb. Kolkata Running Squad, founded in 2015, trains around Victoria Memorial and Red Road with a proper structure of long runs and tempo sessions. These are the groups that were doing it before it was fashionable.

The geography is unusually kind. Kolkata is flat, dense and, by Indian metro standards, compact, and the Maidan sits right in the middle with Victoria Memorial, Red Road and the racecourse all inside or beside it. That means most of the city's running converges on the same few square kilometres, which gives the scene a cohesion that sprawling cities like Hyderabad and Delhi cannot manage. You will run into other clubs.

Salt Lake and New Town in the east are the exception, functioning as their own ecosystem with planned roads, Central Park and considerably less traffic. If you live out there you will probably never run on the Maidan on a weekday, and that is fine.

When to run in Kolkata

Kolkata has a real winter, and it is the best running weather in eastern India. January dawn averages 13.6°C and December 15.4°C, cool enough that you will want a layer for the first kilometre. That is meaningfully colder than Bangalore, Chennai or Mumbai, and it is why the city's race calendar and its serious training both compress into December and January.

The monsoon is the heaviest of any city on this list apart from Mumbai. July averages nearly 30 rain days and August close to 29, with dawn temperatures stuck around 26°C and humidity that makes 26°C feel considerably worse. This is a four-month stretch, June through September, where running is possible but consistently unpleasant, and waterlogging in the older parts of the city is a genuine hazard.

April and May are the other difficult window, and they are the ones that catch people out. Dawn climbs to 25 to 27°C in pre-monsoon humidity, and the afternoon highs of 34 to 36°C come with a stickiness that dry-heat cities like Delhi do not have. Between the pre-monsoon and the monsoon itself, roughly half the year here is hard work.

The reward is November to February, which is genuinely excellent: dawn between 13°C and 19°C, almost no rain, and the Maidan at its best. If you are visiting and want to run in Kolkata, come in December or January and you will understand why the city's runners put up with the rest of the year.

Where to run in Kolkata

Frequently asked questions

Are run clubs in Kolkata free?

Calcutta Run Club's weekly runs are free with no registration required, and the Instagram-organised community groups generally are too. Salt Lake Runners and Kolkata Running Squad operate more like structured training groups and may charge for coaching, so check with them directly. There is no large paid academy model here of the kind that dominates Mumbai.

Where are the best places to run in Kolkata?

The Maidan, without much competition. A thousand acres of traffic-free open ground in the middle of the city with grass, dirt and tree-lined avenues, and you can build almost any distance inside it. Red Road cutting through it is effectively a very long flat track in the early morning. Rabindra Sarobar's roughly 3.2km shaded lake loop serves south Kolkata, and Central Park and Eco Park cover the eastern suburbs.

When is the best time of year to run in Kolkata?

December and January, comfortably. Dawn averages 13.6°C in January, which is the coolest of any major Indian city on this list and cold enough to want a layer for the first kilometre. November and February are also good. April through September is hard work: pre-monsoon humidity gives way to a monsoon that brings nearly 30 rain days in July.

Can you run in Kolkata during the monsoon?

It is possible but consistently unpleasant, and this is the heaviest monsoon in the directory after Mumbai's. July and August average 29 to 30 rain days with dawn stuck around 26°C and very high humidity. Waterlogging in the older parts of the city is a real hazard. Most local runners treat June to September as a maintenance period and save real training for the winter.

Do I need to be fast to join a run club in Kolkata?

No. Calcutta Run Club is built specifically around turning up with no registration and no pace expectation, and Kolkata Runners is similarly open. Kolkata Running Squad and Salt Lake Runners are more structured and will suit you better once you have a base, though both take beginners too.

Why is Kolkata's running scene so new?

The city has a long athletic history, but its current club culture is genuinely recent. Calcutta Run Club, now one of the most visible groups in the city, only started in November 2024. Compare that with Chennai Runners in 2006 or Hyderabad Runners in 2007. The upside is a scene that skews young, social and low-barrier; the downside is fewer long-established coached programmes than other Indian metros.
