What BMI actually measures
Body mass index is your weight scaled to your height — nothing more. Devised in the 1830s by the Belgian statistician Adolphe Quetelet and adopted a century and a half later as a population screening tool, it answers one question: is this person heavy for their height? It does not know whether the weight is muscle, fat, bone or water. That single limitation explains almost everything BMI gets right and everything it gets wrong.
Squaring the height is what makes the number comparable across people of different sizes: a 160 cm and a 190 cm person with the same BMI carry roughly proportional mass for their frame. It is not perfect — tall people read slightly high and short people slightly low, because real bodies scale closer to a power of 2.5 than 2 — but for a formula you can compute in your head, it holds up remarkably well at the population level.
The WHO classification
The World Health Organization defines the following ranges for adults aged 20 and over, for both sexes:

These cut-offs come from mortality curves in large cohorts: the risk of dying early is lowest around a BMI of 20–25 and rises on both sides. The rise is gradual, not a cliff — a BMI of 25.5 is not meaningfully different from 24.5, whatever the category labels imply.
BMI Prime
The calculator also reports BMI Prime— your BMI divided by 25. It rescales the same number so that 1.00 sits exactly at the top of the healthy range. A BMI Prime of 1.12 reads directly as “12% over the threshold”, which is often more useful for tracking progress than the raw index.
Where BMI breaks down
Muscle reads as fat
BMI counts every kilogram the same. Muscle is about 18% denser than fat, so anyone who trains seriously drifts up the scale without gaining an ounce of fat. Rugby players, sprinters and lifters routinely classify as overweight or obese by BMI while carrying less body fat than the average “healthy weight” office worker. The cut-offs are not universal
The 18.5–25 band was derived largely from European populations. A WHO expert consultation found that people of South Asian and East Asian descent develop diabetes and cardiovascular disease at substantially lower BMIs, and recommended additional action points of 23 (increased risk) and 27.5 (high risk) for these populations. Several countries — including India, China and Japan — use lower national thresholds outright.
Age changes the picture
Older adults lose muscle and bone, so the same BMI hides more fat at 70 than at 30 — and modest extra weight appears mildly protective in later life. In children and teenagers, raw BMI is not used at all; it is compared against age- and sex-specific percentile charts.
What to use alongside it
BMI is a fine first filter precisely because it is free and instant. When it flags something — or when you suspect it is misreading you — two follow-ups do most of the work.
